Wednesday Hodge Podge

My Favorite Phrase-The Hodge Podge

1. Lake Superior University has once again published a list of words/phrases they think should be banished from the Queen's English...here's the list for 2013-

fiscal cliff, kick the can down the road, double down, job creators/creation, passion/passionate, yolo (an acronym for you only live once), spoiler alert, bucket list, trending, superfood, boneless wings, and guru

Which of these words/phrases would you most like to see banished from everyday speech and why. Go here to read more about how the words were chosen.
Throughout our lives, there have always been words in common use which have special meaning....a few generations later, no one knows what the mean......I don't see the harm in this......I think these people who compiled the list just have way too much time on their hands.

2.  When was the last time you rode a train?  Where did you go?
3 years ago, we rode the Blue Ridge Scenic Railway while on a vacation in Blue Ridge, Georgia

3. Bagels-yay or nay?  Favorite 'flavor'?  Favorite topping?
I like cinnamon/raisin, usually toasted with a little of the spray on butter.

4.  'Tis the season of awards shows...if you could star in a movie already made which one would you choose?
For fun, I'll choose Pretty Woman

5. The move towards single gender classrooms has been making the news in recent months....what say you?  Do you think kids perform better if separated by gender and are taught differently or is that discrimination?  If you're a parent, is this something you'd support in regard to your own children?
Well, this seems like a step backwards to when children had separate schools....

6. What's your favorite thing about staying in a hotel?
I suppose it has the sense of being pampered, in a way, one doesn't have to clean the room or make the bed.......but mainly, I just like to get away from all the responsibility of home for a while. The more luxuriant the better. I like to stay where you pull your car up to the front, a valet takes the keys, unloads the luggage and takes it to your room while someone parks the car. Its a little taste of how the rich people live all the time.

7. Do you have a 'word' for 2013?  What's the story behind your choice?
I don't understand the question

8.  Insert your own random thought here.

  4. I agree about banning words. The only ones I'd ban are vulgar ones.

I agree about hotels, too. I've told my husband that when we go to a hotel or out to eat are the only times I really feel like I am on vacation. Even when everyone else is off for a holiday, I still have my "jobs" of cooking and cleaning to do, and sometimes have more of that than regular days.

I've seen a number of bloggers choosing a word for the year. I've never felt the need to -- I think God has many many words I need to hear. :-) But some find it helpful, so I wouldn't say they shouldn't do it.

  5. I considered putting "Pretty Woman" as my answer, too. Who wouldn't love to be rescued by Richard Gere?

  6. I love toasted bagels, with a little bit of butter (melted in of course) and a touch of strawberry jam - I think you call it jelly! Pretty Woman would also be my choice!

  7. There are a lot of bloggers choosing a word as their theme for the year. Non bloggers too I guess, but it's something you'll see on a lot of blogs. Glad you joined in today!
