An entire
year of bragging rights hinges on the outcome of the Iron Bowl every year. I’m
not sure that any other state’s rivalry is as strong as ours. I remember once
while shopping in Hammers Department Store in Guntersville, I overheard a
recent newcomer talking about attending game day at someone’s home. She was
told she must choose sides and wear the team colors for that team, the reason
she was shopping.
My Daddy was
a big Auburn fan. He was a former Alabama fan who had converted when I married
Jim. He loved to watch the games with my sister or myself. He said he loved to
see how excited we became. I remember well the Iron Bowl in November 1986. It
was the month and year that I stopped smoking. I was not sure I could make it
through the game without a cigarette. It can become pretty intense.
Auburn-Alabama games always seem to be so close score wise. One never knows who
will win until the final seconds. Well this particular year, I found an old
worn out towel to twist and clinch throughout the final quarter and munched on
baby carrots through most of the first three. But I made it to the end. I
haven’t smoked a cigarette since.
That is funny......Glad you gave up those cigs! I quit in 1991... We are not football people but you should have seen us watching the St Louis Cardinals win the World Series! OMG we were hooping and jumping and chewing our nails....... hahaha They won.. OMG..... we love our sports.. Sending hugs on this rainy day ...
ReplyDeleteLove it! Course I think the Florida/Florida State game is rather intense, as well. What a year for the SEC!
ReplyDeleteEmily doesn't have any nails during football season. This year has been particularly bad for us Gators.
Have a great day, mama bear...and may our favorite teams win. =)
Congrats on the anniversary of your, let's see -- 25th year of NO SMOKING!! That's big stuff. And it's funny -- I associate my quit date (September, 1997) with football, too -- only it was high school football. Enjoy the game today! Roll Tide!! :)
ReplyDeleteand who won? (Good for you! I suppose you will say YOu qwon but I meant the team.) I am not into football on television but I enjoy sports in person.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy the day. It is fun to get so patriotic about a team. Why does it make our heart thump the way it does??????
