Wednesday Hodgepodge/Outdoor Wednesday

Today I'm joining Joyce
at
From This Side of the Pond
Moving into Wednesday Vol. 26
1. How many times in your life have you moved house?
22 if I've counted correctly and not left any out.
2. What subject would you study if you had a year to devote to it?
I can think of many subjects I would like to study but none for a year
3. What in this world breaks your heart?
Child abuse and neglect
4. What is one item that symbolizes the times in which we live? Why?
Muli-lanes of traffic...we live at such a fast pace.
5. Share a favorite bumper sticker or t-shirt slogan.
I don't remember any that I've seen lately.
6. How do you like your spaghetti?
With Marinara and meat
7. What is one piece of advice you would give a recent or soon to be recent graduate?
Be true to Yourself and hold on to the values you've learned from your mentors.
8. Insert your own random thought here.
Last night the electricity was off for about 40 minutes...after being without it for 5 days, this was unsettling...we've been told to be conservative, that we are not where we were before the storms and may not be until the end of Summer...During the 5 days, temperatures were so moderate that AC wouldn't have been needed anyway. That isn't the case at present. Our highs are getting into the 90s and we're beginning to experience the humidity that is Summer in the south...Honey Bear and I have discussed what could happen if the electronic structure of our lives were to shut down..we are slowly preparing for just such an event. The dollar is being devalued on the World Market. We could be approaching the end times....I don't know about your family, but we do almost all of our purchasing by credit card and pay our bills on line by debit.  When we had no electricity in half of our state that meant: no traffic lights, no credit card machines or ATMs...Gas pumps didn't work until generators were hooked up...so much of our lives depend on
computer run machines, its scary. Much food for thought.

  1. You make a good point. Back in 1999 we were told to prepare for the possibility of electronic glitches, particularly in banking. We kept cash on hand then and bottled water, etc. We didn't go crazy but could have managed for a couple of weeks while they sorted it out. Nowadays though everything is online...I needed to pay a bill recently and couldn't get on the bank's website. That stressed me out...I suppose we need to always be prepared...it's hard though because we have become slaves to our technology.

  3. Wow, that's a lot of moving!

We have gas heating, water heater, and stove, but they all need electricity to run. :-( My husband did find that he could light the pilot light on the stove with a lighter or match, but I'm a little afraid to do that. But I can remember lighting pilot lights was a regular thing when I was growing up.

  4. I thought about you yesterday when I heard that section of town was without electricity! I immediately plugged in my cell phone and laptop for a recharge "just in case." And wished I had done my laundry already. ha. I guess we'll live in this state of tip-toeing around electricity for awhile. We never did lose power though, and I'm glad yours didn't stay off too long. Not complaining, but it's pretty warm keeping my thermostat set to 78 on these 90 degree days. But I will do it.

  5. Try living in a building with 9 floors and no elevator use. . . we had both elevators go out this past year and did lots of walking down 18 flights of stairs.

  6. We certainly have been spoiled with all the modern conveniences of computers, electricity and such. After experiencing an outage like you did, it would bring home just how much our lives depend on these modern conveniences and how lost we are without them. It certainly is scary!!

Wow, you moved 22 times in your life...I thought I had moved lots at 6 times! lol I enjoyed seeing all these flag pictures:-) xoxo

  7. I agree with you 100%. Things are very scary and it makes you think about how you would function when the things you take for granted go away. Joyce's comment is right on - in 1999 we all prepared for the worst, but we've gotten away from that. We should always be prepared.

  8. Wow, you have done more than your share of moving! I can't imagine.

You are "right on" in your random thoughts. We have been trying to get prepared for a few months now...just in case.

  9. Whew...your random thought left my head spinning! It's scary how much we rely on electricity, isn't it?!
